A COVID-19 vaccine passport system kicks in Wednesday in Ontario, requiring people to show proof of vaccination for entry into thousands of non-essential venues across the province.
Restaurants, bars, sports venues, gyms, theatres, cinemas and casinos are among the locations where staff must ask patrons to show certification that they received two doses of an approved vaccine at least two weeks before, along with identification that matches their vaccination document.
Here's what you need to know about how Ontario's vaccine passport system will work.
Ontarians can download their proof of vaccination from this provincial government website. You need your OHIP card to log in to the site. Once you download the certificate showing you've had two doses of vaccine, you can either print a hard copy or store the PDF on your phone.
Vaccination receipts from jurisdictions outside Ontario are accepted, provided that the vaccine doses received meet the province's definition of fully vaccinated. If any of the doses received were not among Health Canada's four approved vaccines (Pfizer-BioNtech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD or Janssen/Johnson & Johnson), Ontario requires two doses to be considered fully vaccinated, or a follow-up of one dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccine.
Along with the paper or digital copy of your vaccination certificate, you are required to show government-issued identification with your name and date of birth, matching what's on the proof-of-vaccination document. It does not have to be photo ID.
You can use your OHIP card as identification, although the venue staff do not have the right to demand to see your health card as part of your proof of vaccination.
You must show your identification and proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter the following locations:
Children under 12 are not subject to Ontario's vaccine passport system, as they are currently not eligible for vaccination.
To be exempt from Ontario's COVID-19 vaccination requirements, anyone age 12 and up must provide a written document from a physician or a nurse practitioner on official letterhead stating that there is a medical reason for the exemption.
Public health doctors have said medical exemptions are rare and are primarily limited to having a life-threatening allergy to an ingredient in the vaccine, or having had an adverse reaction to a first dose.
There are also a few specific exceptions to the vaccination requirement for the venues listed above:
Provincial officials say Ontario will move to a digital proof-of-vaccination system a month from now. People who've been vaccinated will be able to download a QR code to their phone, which can be read by a free smartphone app to be made available ahead of the Oct. 22 start date.
A plane believed to be carrying Chinese tech executive Meng Wanzhou took off from the Vancouver airport on Friday, marking a new stage in a legal saga that ensnared Canada — and two of its citizens — in a dispute between the U.S. and Chinese governments.
A B.C. court decided on Friday that the extradition case against Meng would be dropped after the Huawei chief financial officer reached a deferred prosecution agreement with the U.S. government.
Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, the two Canadian citizens who were detained in China just days after Meng's arrest in Vancouver, are now on their way back Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed on Friday evening.
Meng's deal with U.S. prosecutors resolved the charges against the Huawei executive.
The agreement set in motion Meng's departure from Canada after she had spent nearly three years under house arrest. The plane that departed Vancouver is an Air China charter destined for Shenzhen, the southern Chinese city where Huawei has its headquarters.
As part of her arrangement with U.S. prosecutors, Meng pleaded not guilty in a court Friday to multiple fraud charges.
The Huawei chief financial officer entered the plea during a virtual appearance in a New York courtroom. She was charged with bank fraud, wire fraud and conspiracies to commit bank and wire fraud more than two and a half years ago.
David Kessler, an attorney with the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York, told the court the deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) will last four years — from the time of her arrest on Dec. 1, 2018, to Dec. 1, 2022.
Kessler said that if Meng complies with her obligations, the U.S. will move to dismiss the charges against her at the end of the deferral period. If she doesn't, she can still be prosecuted.

The agreed statement of facts from Friday's U.S. court appearance said that Meng told a global financial institution that a company operating in Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions was a "local partner" of Huawei when in fact it was a subsidiary of Huawei.
"In entering into the deferred prosecution agreement, Meng has taken responsibility for her principal role in perpetrating a scheme to defraud a global financial institution," Acting U.S. Attorney Nicole Boeckmann said in a statement.
Later Friday afternoon, B.C. Supreme Court Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes officially ended the Canadian proceedings, signing an order to discharge the U.S. extradition request and vacate Meng's bail conditions.
She addressed Meng directly before ending a hearing that lasted less than 15 minutes.
"You have been cooperative and courteous throughout the proceedings and the court appreciates and thanks you for that," Holmes said.
Outside the court, Meng read from prepared remarks while flanked by her legal team. She thanked Holmes for her "fairness" during the proceedings.
"I also appreciate the court for their professionalism and the Canadian government for upholding the rule of law," Meng said.
"I'm also grateful to the Canadian people and media friends for your tolerance. Sorry for the inconvenience caused."
In a media statement issued this evening, the federal Department of Justice confirmed that "Meng Wanzhou is free to leave Canada."
"Canada is a rule of law country," says the statement. "Meng Wanzhou was afforded a fair process before the courts in accordance with Canadian law. This speaks to the independence of Canada's judicial system."
U.S. prosecutors also credited the Canadian justice system for its commitment to the legal process.
"We are enormously grateful to Canada's Department of Justice for its dedicated work on this extradition and for its steadfast adherence to the rule of law," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Mark J. Lesko.
Canadian citizens Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig are returning to Canada nearly three years after they were arrested in China, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday evening.
"These two men have gone through an unbelievably difficult ordeal," Trudeau said in Ottawa. "For the past 1,000 days, they have shown strength, perseverance, resilience and grace."
Spavor and Kovrig boarded their flight about 7:30 p.m. ET, Trudeau said. They are being accompanied by Dominic Barton, Canada's ambassador to China.
The 'two Michaels' were detained in what is widely considered a retaliatory act after the Chinese tech executive Meng Wangzhou was arrested in Vancouver on Dec. 1, 2018, at the request of the U.S. government.
Meng reached a deferred prosecution agreement with the U.S. government earlier Friday, setting off a quick chain of events that saw her extradition case dropped by a B.C. court and concluded with her departure from the Vancouver airport, also about 7:30 p.m. ET.
China has insisted throughout the legal saga that Spavor and Kovrig were arrested on legitimate grounds, but the timing of their release is sure to bolster Ottawa's argument that the two men were arbitrarily detained.
Trudeau deflected questions about what the development will mean for the strained relationship between Canada and China. He also did not answer exactly how their release came about.
"There is going to be time for analysis and reflection in the coming days and weeks, but the fact of the matter is, I know Canadians will be incredibly happy to know right now, this Friday night, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor are on a plane and they're coming home," he told reporters in Parliament's West Block building.
Spavor, an entrepreneur who worked in North Korea and China, was found guilty of spying and sentenced to 11 years in prison and extradition by a Chinese court in August.
The trial for Kovrig, a diplomat, concluded in March, but he had not yet been sentenced.
Both men were initially detained on Dec. 10, 2018, 10 days after Meng's arrest in Vancouver.
"China ... up until now, has said that there's been no linkage between the two, but by putting them on the plane tonight, they've clearly acknowledged that this was hostage-taking," said Colin Robertson, a former Canadian diplomat for more than 30 years.
"It reminds me of the swaps you used to have of spies in the Cold War."
Robertson speculated that U.S. President Joe Biden, who is directing increasing attention to China, may have helped broker the deal during a recent call with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trudeau was asked on Friday if he spoke to Xi ahead of the release, but Trudeau said Canadian diplomats were the ones leading the work.
"[I'm] pretty surprised, I must say, because China's been saying for the last many, many months that the cases were not related," said Margaret McCuaig-Johnston, a member of the Canada-China Forum's advisory board.
"Of course, we all knew that they were, and now it's proof that they were."
Ben Rowswell, the president of the Canadian International Council and a former diplomat, says China's detention of the two Michaels has set a "terrible precedent."
"One can only hope, the fact that it didn't get what they wanted — Meng Wanzhou was not free for these three years — and based on the really large international coalition of countries that came together to condemn China, that they will think hard about practicing such hostage diplomacy a second time," he said.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said in a statement that his government welcomes the return of the Spavor and Kovrig "after more than two-and-a-half years of arbitrary detention."

She also lived under house arrest at a multimillion-dollar home in Vancouver while awaiting extradition. Spavor and Kovrig were held in Chinese prisons during the same period.
Meng read from a prepared statement, following what was likely her last appearance in a B.C. court, in which she thanked the Canadian government "for upholding the rule of law."
